Division of Animal Behavior (DAB): 2007 Fall Newsletter

Message from Tom Hahn (Chair), Sarah Humfeld (Program Officer), and Scott MacDougall-Shackleton (Secretary)

Greetings from your DAB Executive!

Upcoming Meeting in San Antonio

We look forward to seeing all of you in San Antonio. Sarah is familiar with San Antonio and assures us this should be a great venue with lots of great science and lots of great places to eat and visit nearby.

Our division is co-sponsoring a whopping four symposia this year:

  • Evolution vs. Creationism in the classroom: evolving student attitudes

  • Consequences of maternally-derived yolk hormones for offspring: current status, challenges and opportunities

  • Reptile genomics and evolutionary genetics

  • Aeroecology: probing and modeling the aerosphere - the next frontier

Make sure to check out the excellent line up of speakers. We will again have a combined social/ business meeting. Please plan to attend.

Best Student Presentations from 2007

The best student presentations in Animal Behavior at the 2007 meeting were:

Best Student Oral Presentation: Heidi Mahon, Old Dominion University
"Energy maximization strategies of two surface deposit-feeding gastropods"

Best Student Poster: Devin Zysling, Indiana University
"Seasonal Changes in Immunity: Immune responses track energetics in Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus)"

Congratulations Heidi and Devin! And many thanks to the judges. If you are willing to serve as judge in San Antonio please contact Scott by email.

Upcoming Elections

In 2008 we will need to elect a new Secretary for the Division. If you or someone you know is interested please let Tom know. We will soon be putting together a list of nominees.

See you in January,

Tom, Sarah and Scott.
