Proposed Change in SICB Constitution

Present Article III. Section 4. Educational Council

The President, after consultation with the Executive Committee, shall appoint an Educational Council consisting of five members, and sixth member who shall serve as Chair and will be elected by the general membership of the Society. The Chair will sit on the Executive Committee. Selection of new members will be made by a recommendation of the Council to the President-Elect. Each member shall serve for a term of three years, and initial members will serve staggered terms so that two replacements are made each year.

Proposed wording (CHANGES IN UPPER CASE):

The President, after consultation with the Executive Committee, shall appoint an Educational Council consisting of AT LEAST FIVE members, and AN ADDITIONAL member who shall serve as Chair and will be elected by the general membership of the Society. The Chair will sit on the Executive Committee. Selection of new members will be made by a recommendation of the Council to the President-Elect. Each member shall serve for a term of three years. THESE TERMS SHALL BE staggered so that two or three replacements are made each year. [The remainder of Section 4 remains unchanged]

Rationale for change.

In the report from the Task Force on Education the Educational Council proposed an ambitious array of new initiatives that it feels will better meet the needs of SICB members and bring the Society into greater prominence within scientific communities. In order to accomplish these initiatives five sub-committees of two-individuals each were recommended. The proposed change allows the Council to increase its membership to meet these needs and more expeditiously implement the new programs.

The Executive Committee of SICB has voted that the proposed amendment be submitted to the membership for approval.
