John S. Pearse


Current Position: Research Professor, University of California, Santa Cruz

Professional Experience: Assistant Professor, American University in Cairo, Egypt, 1965-68; Research Fellow, California Institute of Technology, 1968-1971; Assistant Professor, 1971-74, Associate Professor, 1974-78, Professor, 1978-1994, University of California, Santa Cruz; Visiting Faculty member: Stanford University, Oregon State University, California Institute of Technology, University of Southern California, University of California, San Diego, Harvard University, Bermuda Biological Station, Bamfield Marine Station, University of the Ryukyus.

SICB Activities: Member since 1967; Co-organizer, "Antarctic Marine Biology" symposium, 1988; participant in three other symposia; Publication Committee, 1994-present.

Other Memberships: American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, California Academy of Sciences (President), International Society of Invertebrate Reproduction (President), Sigma Xi (Chapter President); Western Society of Naturalists (President).

Research Interests: Reproductive biology of marine invertebrates, especially modes and temporal patterns in echinoderms, molluscs, and cnidarians; photoperiodism; lunar rhythms; rocky intertidal and kelp forest ecology.

Goals Statement: It is more crucial than ever in these times of both specialization and the multiplication of environmental and health crises that the varied fields of biology work together to integrate knowledge and approaches. I look forward to working with the other officers to bring members and a wider audience a diverse variety of symposiums, publications, and other avenues that enhance the relevance of biology.

David J. Prior


Current Position: Professor of Biology and Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, Northern Michigan University.

Education: Ph.D., University of Virginia, 1972.

Professional Experience: Instructor, MBL in Woods Hole; Instructor, Friday Harbor Laboratories, University of Washington.

SICB Activities: Member since 1969; Secretary, Division of Comparative Physiology and Biochemistry; Chair, Division of Neurobiology.

Research Interests: Cellular neurobiology and water balance of invertebrates.

John F. Pilger


Current Position: Professor of Biology, Agnes Scott College.

Education: B.S., University of Southern California, 1971; Ph.D., University of Southern California, 1977; Smithsonian Postdoctoral Fellow, 1977-79.

Professional Experience: Chair of Biology Department, Agnes Scott College, 1987-97.

SICB Activities: Member since 1973. Secretary, Division of Invertebrate Zoology, 1983-85; Chaired and participated in DIZ Best Student Paper Award Committee; Member, Education Council, 1995-98; Participant, Educational Council-sponsored Roundtable, 1995.

Research Interests: Reproductive and developmental biology of the Echiura and Sipuncula.

Pedagogical Interests: Undergraduate science education, with particular interest in biology education for women; critical thinking and inquiry in science courses.

Ken Prestwich


Current Position: Associate Professor of Biology, Holy Cross.

Education: Ph.D., Zoology, University of Florida, 1982; M.S., Zoology, University of Florida, 1975; B.S., Biology, Davidson College, 1971.

Professional Experience: Department of Physiology, University of Florida, 1982-83; American Heart Association Postdoctoral, 1982-83; Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology, Swarthmore College, 1983-94; Assistant Professor of Biology, Holy Cross College, 1984-89; Associate Professor of Biology, Holy Cross College, 1990-present; Holy Cross Outstanding Teaching Award, 1992.

Other Memberships: Behavior Society.

Research Interests: Comparative physiology and behavioral ecology of acoustic communication; energetic costs, mechanisms of sound production, and the evolution of acoustic signals, especially in insects; the physiology and energetics of locomotion in spiders.

Pedagogical Interests: Present primary interests are in the development and dissemination of teaching materials on the World Wide Web.

Alissa J. Arp

Professional Experience: Assistant Research Biologist, San Francisco State University, 1986-88; Visiting Scientist, Moss Landing Marine Labs, 1988-89; Associate Professor and Professor of Biology, San Francisco State University, 1989-present; Director, Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies, 1996-present.

SICB Activities: Member since 1982. Chair, CBP Best Student Paper Award Committee, 1988; Member, CBP Best Student Paper Award Committee, 1987; Sponsor of 2-3 students per meeting (three have received best student paper/poster honors), 1986-present; Symposium co-organizer, Los Angeles meeting, 1993.

William E. Zamer

Professional Experience: NSF Research Assistant, research cruise to the Antarctic Peninsula, 1983; Postdoctoral Research Associate, Iowa State University, 1985-89; Assistant Professor, Lake Forest College, 1989-95; NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award, 1990-present; Markey Fellowship, Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, 1990; President, Lake Forest College chapter of Sigma Xi, 1993-94; Research Associate Professor, Grice Marine Biological Laboratory, College of Charleston, S.C., 1996-97; NSF panelist, doctoral dissertation improvement grants, Ecological and Evolutionary Physiology Program, 1997-2000.

SICB Activities: Member since 1978. Judge, Best Student Paper Award, DCPB, 1993, 1995 (Chair); Co-Organizer of a symposium on "Evolutionary Physiology," scheduled for the 1998 meeting in Boston.

Research Interests: Physiological and metabolic mechanisms of adaptation to temperature and nutrient availability in sea anemones; understanding changes in metabolic pathway performance when temperature and nutrient conditions change; mechanisms by which genetic variation influences physiological performance, and estimating genetic variance components of performance in clonal anemones; understanding how such genetic influences on performance affect population genetic structure.
