John S. Pearse

Professional Experience: Assistant Professor, American University in Cairo, Egypt, 1965-68; Research Fellow, California Institute of Technology, 1968-1971; Assistant Professor, 1971-74, Associate Professor, 1974-78, Professor, 1978-1994, University of California, Santa Cruz; Visiting Faculty member: Stanford University, Oregon State University, California Institute of Technology, University of Southern California, University of California, San Diego, Harvard University, Bermuda Biological Station, Bamfield Marine Station, University of the Ryukyus.
SICB Activities: Member since 1967; Co-organizer, "Antarctic Marine Biology" symposium, 1988; participant in three other symposia; Publication Committee, 1994-present.

Research Interests: Reproductive biology of marine invertebrates, especially modes and temporal patterns in echinoderms, molluscs, and cnidarians; photoperiodism; lunar rhythms; rocky intertidal and kelp forest ecology.
Goals Statement: It is more crucial than ever in these times of both specialization and the multiplication of environmental and health crises that the varied fields of biology work together to integrate knowledge and approaches. I look forward to working with the other officers to bring members and a wider audience a diverse variety of symposiums, publications, and other avenues that enhance the relevance of biology.

Research Interests: Cellular neurobiology and water balance of invertebrates.

Research Interests: Reproductive and developmental biology of the Echiura and Sipuncula.
Pedagogical Interests: Undergraduate science education, with particular interest in biology education for women; critical thinking and inquiry in science courses.
Ken Prestwich

Research Interests: Comparative physiology and behavioral ecology of acoustic communication; energetic costs, mechanisms of sound production, and the evolution of acoustic signals, especially in insects; the physiology and energetics of locomotion in spiders.
Pedagogical Interests: Present primary interests are in the development and dissemination of teaching materials on the World Wide Web.

Research Interests: Physiological and metabolic mechanisms of adaptation to temperature and nutrient availability in sea anemones; understanding changes in metabolic pathway performance when temperature and nutrient conditions change; mechanisms by which genetic variation influences physiological performance, and estimating genetic variance components of performance in clonal anemones; understanding how such genetic influences on performance affect population genetic structure.
