Guides for Graduate Study, and Beyond!

Dr. Dale Bloom (a past chair of the Division of Comparative Immunology) and two of her former postdocs have written a book to provide prospective or in-process graduate students with answers to lots of those "What's grad school all about?" or "Why didn't anybody tell me?" queries. Published by Oxford University Press, Bloom, Karp & Cohen's The Ph.D. Process: A Student's Guide to Graduate School in the Sciences addresses questions like "What are the best strategies for applying to a graduate program? How are classes conducted? How should I choose an advisor and a research project? What steps can I take now to make myself more "employable" when I get my degree? What goes on at the oral defense?"

To help graduate students nearing metamorphosis deal with the "What next?" panic, the American Geophysical Union (AGU) has produced To Boldly Go...a Practical Career Guide for Scientists by Peter S. Fiske. It emphasizes the variety of potential careers for trained scientists, beyond the academic track that we often think of as the only option, and how to go about beginning such a career. There's a web site with feedback on the book and a list of additional resources at http://www.agu.org/careerguide.

International Congress On Ecosystem Health

The International Society for Ecosystem Health and the University of California at Davis are co-organizers for "Managing for Ecosystem Health," an International Congress on Ecosystem Health to be held Aug. 15-20, 1999 at the Sacramento Convention Center, Sacramento, Calif.

The objective of the program is to encourage integrative thinking towards managing for ecosystem health. The Congress will bring together internationally-recognized scholars from a wide variety of disciplines, as well as representatives from government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and business. Presentations will provide integration of contemporary research from multiple disciplines and compelling case studies to form technical sessions that each span the range from research to management of ecosystem health.

The Second International Symposium on Krill

This symposium will be held Aug. 23-27, 1999 on the campus of the University of California-Santa Cruz. Its intent is to review current knowledge of krill biology, to highlight gaps and future areas for research, and to show how the study of a range species of krill can illuminate more general problems (for example krill flux, recruitment, swarming behavior, age and growth). The sessions (and invited speakers) are:

  • "Krill Demography, Life History and Genetic Diversity" (V. Siegel, Germany; Vassily Spirodonov, Germany; T. Paternello, Italy; E. Pakamov, South Africa)
  • "Krill Development, Growth, Reproduction and Aging" (N. Iguchi, Japan; S. Nicol, Australia; J. Cuzin-Roudy, France)
  • "Krill Physiology, Metabolism Nutrition and Energetics" (L. Quetin, USA; F. Buchholz, Germany; R. Perissinoto, South Africa; Y. Nishino, Japan; P. Mayzaud, France; S. Falk-Petersen, Norway; A. Clarke, UK)
  • "Krill Behavior: Swarming, Vertical Migration, Foraging and Antipredator Mechanisms" (W. Hamner, USA; D. Ritz, Australia; L. Madureira, Brazil; J Watkins, UK; A. Brierley, UK)

The opening talk will be given by D. Miller (South Africa).

Each day will include invited and contributed talks and poster sessions. Details may be obtained from the web site http://www2.ucsc.edu/people/msmangel/Krill_Symposium.html, or by contacting Marc Mangel by email at msmangel@cats.ucsc.edu.
